Daily news is a term used to refer to the information that is reported in newspapers. These articles often report on the news of the day and may also contain opinions or political commentary. Some of the most popular daily news stories include those that relate to wars and terrorism, but they also often cover a variety of other topics such as weather events, sports and celebrities. Many of these articles contain questions that can be used to engage students in learning about the news of the day. These questions can help students better understand the story and can be used as a basis for classroom discussion or a classroom activity.
Founded in 1919, the New York Daily News prides itself on being “New York’s Hometown Newspaper.” It has been known over the years for its zesty headlines — perhaps most famously with the 1975 screamer, “Ford to City: Drop Dead!” — gossip and city coverage, as well as for a roster of star columnists including Jimmy Breslin, Pete Hamill and Liz Smith. The News has long fought a circulation battle with its muscular hometown tabloid rival, the New York Post, and in recent years has struggled with the industry shift to digital news delivery and declining print sales.
The paper is currently owned by Tronc, a newspaper company that also owns the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times. The Daily News is now available for free online, and the company claims that it has a unique audience of more than 25 million people each month. Its website also features a large collection of historical news articles from the paper’s past, as well as a number of different news blogs that cover various topics.
From 1929 to 1995 the News was located in 220 East 42nd Street, an official city and national landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The building was later used as the model for the Daily Planet buildings in the first two Superman films. The Daily News moved to 450 West 33rd Street in 1995 (now called Manhattan West), but the 42nd Street location remains an iconic city landmark, complete with its giant globe and weather instruments in the lobby.
The Daily News also owns WPIX, an FM radio station whose call letters are taken from the newspaper’s nickname as New York’s Picture Newspaper. Originally a local broadcaster, the station became a nationally syndicated FM simulcast of its namesake in 2014 and is currently owned by CBS Radio. All three media outlets are still based in the old Daily News Building, now known as One Police Plaza. They share offices and resources with other local news agencies.
