From One to Z
The 70-foot
long stream is a hub for students and faculty who sit and read on the
stepping stones at Eastern Washington University, WA. The sculptural
environment defines the campus, contextually connecting the buildings
around it through stepping-stones derived from ancient clay Sumerian
tokens. Enlarged in bronze, they educate the public on the
technological connection between counting tokens and cuneiform writing
discovered by archaeologist, Denise Schmandt-Besserrat. On another
level the artwork alludes to the stepping-stones of civilization.
