"Daedalus' Labyrinth" Proposal
Daedalus' Labyrinth represents the theme of the unknown and future of Long Beach. The artwork is inspired by the story of the architect, Daedalus, who escaped from the labyrinth by inventing wings for himself. Just as Daedalus reinvented his story by flying from one unknown place to another, the development of the Promenade is the City's way of evolving the story of Long Beach into the future. It represents a spiraling form, moving upwards into the future (Daedalus) - out of the unknown - (Labyrinth). The spiral form takes the abstract shape of an egg, symbolic harbinger of the future. Tethered to the egg is an astronaut, as a modern Daedalus, flying safely away from the sun into the future, referencing the history of aerospace industry in Long Beach.
